Tobacco is most commonly used for smoking and is a valuable cash crop for countries such as Cuba, India, China, and the United States. Tobacco is a name for any plant of the genus Nicotiana of the Solanaceae family (nightshade family) this can now be manufactured into cigars and cigarettes, and pipe and chewing tobacco.

Tobacco is burned and the smoke is tasted or inhaled. This is primarily practised as recreational drug use, as combustion releases the active substances in drugs such as nicotine and makes them available for absorption through the lungs.
